4th  Sunday of Lent Yr C  - 14th March 2010

 It is all God’s work

In Joshua’s description of the first celebration, of Passover in the Promised Land, we are also reminded of our obligation as

Christians to maintain the great tradition  of the Paschal-event which is al the heart of our community life. The movement of the Lenten season, the direction of all that we hear and proclaim and do, the horizon of our fasting, prayer, and concern for the needy in our midst— all of this is a preparation for the Passover of Jesus Christ, the Paschal Mystery of his dying and rising, and of ours as well, our entrance into the saving event of life from death, of hope from despair, of joy from grief. Through this ongoing celebration of the Eucharist, we remember our redemption in Christ Jesus. We live in hope of God’s promise, and so we tell our stories, sing our songs, share the bread and the wine of God’s liberating love in Christ Jesus, and go forth to proclaim the gospel through the daily witness of our lives.

Although written at different times and from obviously different perspectives, there are parables of another sort, this time between Paul’s words and Jesus parable of the lost son and the prodigal father. The liturgical proximity to Luke’s Gospel makes such a

comparison easy, and if we were to attempt to summarize what is central to both, we would not do better than to say with Paul,

“It is all God’s work”……..What the life of grace lays out  before us is a mission, the task of proclaiming that “God was in Christ reconciling the world to himself, not holding anyone’s faults against them, but entrusting to us the message of reconciliation”

Looking ahead to Jesus’ parable of the wayward sons and the welcoming-home father, we find all of this spelled out in a story-form that touches many people because it hits close to the truth of their experience.

The ministry of reconciliation leaves no one out of the picture. The call of the Gospel comes to sinners of all stripes— the clear-cut, in-your-face-, caught-with-their-pants-down sinners; the subtle, out-of-sight, Sunday-go-to-meeting sinners; and everyone else in between. Our Sunday Eucharist is always a gathering of this mixed bag of sinners who, have opened themselves to this reconciling grace, and who, through the strength of this celebration, have accepted their role as “ambassadors of Christ”

 Project Compassion Sunday

Care for God’s creation has always been an important part of

Christian tradition. In this week’s Project Compassion story we meet Clare from the Southern highlands in Papua New Guinea. Clare works in the maternity ward, supporting local women to have access to safe maternity services. She also works as an educator on

maternal health issues and provides ongoing support to mothers about child health, nutrition and prevention of disease.

Your donation to Caritas Australia’s Project Compassion helps PNG communities to have access to safe maternity and child health

facilities as well as primary health care.
